Plywood alternatives on the market
If plywood is the default for fixed furniture, the fibreboards are what get proposed when the quote comes back too high. Some of those substitutions are sensible and some will cost you the kitchen. It is worth knowing which is which.

What a fibreboard is
Fibreboards are engineered from plant fibres, wood flakes, sawdust, wood chips and recycled material such as paper and cardboard, bonded with synthetic resin under high pressure and heat.
Because they are built from fibre rather than sliced timber, they have no knots and no grain. That is either the point or the problem, depending on what you are making. It also makes them noticeably cheaper than plywood.
The four you will be offered
1. Low Density Fibreboard (LDF), or particleboard
The cheapest board on the market, roughly 160–450 kg/m³. Commonly used as underlayment, and in kitchen cabinets, wardrobes and furniture where budget leads. It is susceptible to moisture and has no business outdoors.
2. Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF)
The most common of the four. Hardwood or softwood particles and fibres bonded with resin, at 600–800 kg/m³. More durable than LDF, still cheaper than plywood. It has no grain or knots and can crack under stress, but designers keep reaching for it because it cuts clean and paints beautifully.
3. High Density Fibreboard (HDF), or hardboard
Thin, but made of tightly compressed wood and resin, so it is tougher than MDF. Density runs 600–1450 kg/m³. Suits furniture where a laminate goes on top as the finished surface.
4. Moisture-resistant particleboard
Structurally an LDF, but made with a moisture-resistant resin — usually dyed green, which is how you spot it — to stop the board swelling and bowing in humid conditions.

Where each one fails
This is the part worth paying attention to, because every one of these boards fails in a specific and predictable way.
Water. LDF and MDF swell irreversibly. A leaking kitchen trap will destroy a particleboard carcass and no repair will bring it back. This is the single most common reason a two-year-old kitchen looks ten.
Screw holding. Fibreboard does not grip a screw the way plywood does, and it grips it far worse the second time. Any door that will be adjusted, removed or rehung wants ply behind the hinge.
Edges. With no grain, a cut edge is raw fibre. It must be banded or sealed, and if the banding lifts, moisture gets straight in.
So is it worth saving the money?
Sometimes, and in specific places. MDF on a painted shutter is not a compromise — it is genuinely the better material, because plywood's grain telegraphs through paint and MDF's does not. LDF in a kitchen carcass, on the other hand, is a decision you will meet again.
